The Maori Tupuna is a Rapa Nui music and dance group that specializes in the maintenance of the ancestral roots of the Rapa Nui cultural heritage, through the interpretation of the oral tradition. It also develops the concept of musical evolution, of theatrical expressions and dance towards the contemporary, strengthening the interpretation of being Rapa Nui, as a unique and effective proposal.<\/p>\n

It is born after the reinvention of the group Mata to’a, – after a trajectory of more than 14 years of its governing members -, in March of 2010.<\/p>\n

It is directed by Carlos “Ariki” Lillo Haoa, as Artistic Director, Sing-author, guitar interpreter and First Voice of the Group. Also, Angie Pont is the curator, choreographer and cultural manager of the group.<\/p>\n

The works developed to date and that are exhibited weekly in the Vai te Mihi events center are:<\/p>\n

1. Mata To’a (The Look of the Peace Warrior), executed since 2010 to date.<\/p>\n

2. Te a’amu o te haka’ara ma’ohi Rapa Nui (The story of the descendants of the Ma’ohi Rapa nui people) executed from 2013 to date.<\/p>\n

3. Tatou ‘e piri nei pahe hau ma\u00f3hi Rapa nui (What unites us, our Rapa Nui identity) executed since the year 2016, to date.<\/p>\n

In each of these works are represented both traditional part of the song riu and ute, the recitation of stories through games of kai kai, the interpretation of stories through the painting of bodies in the traditional style or Ta kona, As well as histories with narrations obtained from the oral tradition, carried by the group director and the curator to lyrics in native language and musicalization, interpreted through contemporary rhythms, accompanied by traditional instruments such as pierced stones and jaws of horse.<\/p>\n

So too, modern instruments such as Tahitian and Hawaiian ukulele, guitar and drums, among others. Each artistic presentation is performed completely live, between recitation, singing, music, dance and theatricals to the traditional Rapa nui style. The dress used for these performances is based mainly on the historical chronology of each theme, being used from the traditional costume or hami, for the interpretation of traditional themes such as hoko song and dance; Of natural fibers and feathers, mostly related to the contemporary and cloth suits made with designs of the traditional symbology to represent the present era of the evolution of the Polynesian culture Rapa nui.<\/p>\n

Maori Tupuna, stands out for interpreting in his show, 100% Rapa nui culture, in his native language and with music, dance and original theatricals, works created by the director and curator Angie Pont.<\/p>\n
