It is believed that the first honey bees were introduced by French missionaries who arrived on Easter Island in the mid-nineteenth century.<\/p>\n

Carlos Edmunds Paoa, one of the pioneers in the artisan production of honey for family consumption, remembers how his grandmother brought a beehive from the continent in the 50s of the last century.<\/p>\n

Now, with the impulse of her daughter Diana Edmunds and her husband Ren\u00e9 Ocampo, they have created Meri Heretea,<\/strong> a family project dedicated to the study, production and diffusion of a unique honey in the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to recent studies, due to the extreme geographical isolation, Easter Island bees are free of the main diseases<\/strong> that these insects suffer and therefore it is not necessary to treat them chemically. This means that honey from the island is considered one of the healthiest honeys in the world<\/strong>. In addition, due to the subtropical climate of Easter Island, in which temperatures remain stable, constant production is achieved throughout the year.<\/p>\n

Rapanui honey has already become a very desired gourmet food, and in addition to being healthier, it contains numerous aromatic nuances from tropical fruits<\/strong> that grow on the island, such as bananas, pineapple, guava or mango, which are not present in continental Chile.<\/p>\n

Meri Heretea honey has a more liquid consistency than common honey, due to the higher humidity of the nectar that prevents further crystallization. Its flavor and texture is very soft on the palate and has different aromas and colors depending on the plants visited by the bees at each time of the year.
