These beliefs and their evolution significantly affected the course of <a title=\"Easter Island History\" href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/easter-island-history\/\">history<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The religious rituals started from birth, when the umbilical cord was cut, and extended through their whole lives, including rituals for the first haircut, the first tattoos, initiation and coming of age rituals.<\/p>\n<!-- Widget Shortcode --><div id=\"text-47\" class=\"widget widget_text widget-shortcode area-arbitrary \">\t\t\t<div class=\"textwidget\"><p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 0.7em; color: #c4c4c4; margin-top: 40px; margin-bottom: 5px;\">ADVERTISING<\/p>\r\n<div class=\"anuncio\">\r\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-9974337153208599\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Banner_Central Rapa Nui -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:300px;height:250px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9974337153208599\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"4035446418\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><!-- \/Widget Shortcode -->\n<p>But perhaps the most important rituals, that most affected <a href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/rapa-nui-culture\/\">Rapa Nui<\/a> art and history, were the ones associated with death. The Rapa Nui believed that their forefathers\u2019 spirits had the ability to come to their aid in case it was necessary, since the spirit remained around his relatives for a long time before leaving for good. This spiritual energy or <b>mana<\/b>, attributed mostly to chiefs and important members of society, had the ability to influence events for a long time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4544 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/imaginarapanui.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Enterramientos0.jpg?resize=640%2C337&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"rapa nui religion and beliefs\" width=\"640\" height=\"337\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This cult to the ancestors led to the development of a funeral ritual which consisted in wrapping the bodies in vegetable fabric and expose them to open air inside the ahu until their decomposition. Finally, the bones were washed and deposited in a funeral chamber in the same ahu, so that the spirit could reunite with its ancestors.<\/p>\n<p>But above all else, the ancestor cult gave way to the most representative Easter Island characteristic, the <a title=\"Easter Island Heads\" href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/rapa-nui-culture\/moai-easter-island-statues\/\"><strong>moai<\/strong><\/a>. When a tribe chief or any of the important members dies, a moai was ordered to be sculpted in the <a title=\"Rano Raraku\" href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/easter-island-sightseeing\/easter-island-volcanoes\/rano-raraku\/\"><strong>Rano Raraku<\/strong><\/a> quarry and was later transported to its village and placed on an ahu or ceremonious altar. Once placed on its altar, the eyes and <a title=\"Puna Pau\" href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/easter-island-sightseeing\/easter-island-volcanoes\/puna-pau\/\"><strong>pukao<\/strong><\/a> were placed (a type of hat carved from red scoria), at which moment the moai obtained their <b>mana <\/b>and could exercise their power. There were more than 300 ahus on the whole island and more than 600 moai, mainly in the coastal regions and always facing their village, which it protected.<\/p>\n<p>But the crisis and conflicts within the population, due to the scarcity of food, which happened between the 17th and 18th centuries, caused a decline in the moais and ancestor cult era, giving way to a new religious and political order.<\/p>\n<p>The belief in <strong>Make-Make<\/strong> or creating god prevails even more strongly and it is at this point that the <a title=\"Tangata Manu\" href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/rapa-nui-culture\/tangata-manu-the-easter-island-birdman\/\"><strong>Tangata Manu or Birdman<\/strong><\/a> ceremony starts being celebrated, through which the island\u2019s governors are chosen. In this way a member of the working class could still gain political power, since the competition for the first <a href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/manutara-sacred-bird-rapa-nui-easter-island\/\">manutara<\/a> (Easter Island seagull) egg requires a great strength and physical prowess.<\/p>\n<p>There were also a series of prohibitions and precepts that governed the daily life of Rapanui, who were known by the name of <b>tapu<\/b> (taboo).
