This large ahu, whose rear retaining wall is semicircular in shape, measures 86 meters long and 12 meters wide and supported <strong>eight statues<\/strong> that now lie on the ground face down.<\/p>\n<p>This place, which has not been restored, is a good example of the so-called <em>huri moai<\/em> period or demolition of the moai, which took place from the eighteenth century as a result of internal struggles between the different clans of the island.<\/p>\n<p>Around the ahu, there are some <strong>pukao or volcanic red stone headdresses<\/strong> that crowned the statues. In other times, in its interior certain commemorative rituals were performed to honor different members of the family.<\/p>\n<p>Near the ahu there are other interesting archaeological remains. At present, <strong>the small cove is still used as a small fishing port<\/strong>. The locals also come here to spend the weekend. They fish on the shore and then prepare a <a href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/easter-island-food\/\"><em>tunu ahi<\/em><\/a> where they cook the fish on hot stones while sharing as a family.<\/p>\n<h2>A hippodrome for a day<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/imaginarapanui.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Tapati-Rapa-Nui-Carrera-de-Caballos.jpg?resize=640%2C427&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"J\u00f3venes jinetes cabalgando en Vaihu durante la Tapati Rapa Nui\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Young jockeys riding in Vaihu during the Tapati Rapa Nui<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the celebration of the <strong>Tapati Rapa Nui Festival<\/strong>, which takes place the first half of February, the wide dirt road of Vaihu, which runs parallel to the coast, is transformed for a day, into <strong>a long horse racing track<\/strong>. That day, you can see some <strong>very young jockeys riding bareback<\/strong> and at high speed, while being cheered by those attending this unique and remote equestrian event.<\/p>\n<h2>How to get to Vaihu<\/h2>\n<p>To arrive by vehicle from <a href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/easter-island-sightseeing\/hanga-roa\/\">Hanga Roa<\/a>, take Hotu Matu&#8217;a Avenue towards <a href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/easter-island-sightseeing\/easter-island-beaches\/anakena\/\">Anakena<\/a>, then turn right at the crossroads indicating the road to Rano Raraku and continue for approximately 6 kilometers. It is recommended to do it with a local guide or tour.
