It was this priest who conducted the first archaeological inventory of the island and the first restoration of the ceremonial village of <a title=\"Orongo\" href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/easter-island-sightseeing\/easter-island-archaeology\/orongo\/\"><strong>Orongo<\/strong><\/a>. This collection increased because at that time an intense scientific study and restoration began on the island, enabling the discovery of many more historically valuable pieces.<\/p>\n<p>The Easter Island Museum&#8217;s current collection consists of about 15,000 objects, most of which are stone tools such as toki (hatchet) and hoe (knife), and other needle-bone artifacts, ornaments and mangai (hook), coral and timber. However, in the Permanent Exhibition Hall (built thanks to Japanese donations) you can only see a small sample of the collection.<\/p>\n<h2>Main pieces of the museum<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to the extensive and well-detailed information panels showing the <a href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/easter-island-history\/\">history<\/a> of Easter Island from its geological formation, the following are among the most outstanding pieces in the exhibition:<\/p>\n<h3>The moai eye<\/h3>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4014 aligncenter\" style=\"font-size: 13px;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/imaginarapanui.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/ojo-mohai.jpg?resize=640%2C389&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Easter Island Museum\" width=\"640\" height=\"389\" \/><br \/>\nThis eye was discovered during the restoration of <a title=\"Ahu Nau Nau\" href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/easter-island-sightseeing\/easter-island-archaeology\/ahu-nau-nau\/\"><strong>Ahu Nau Nau<\/strong><\/a> on <a title=\"Anakena\" href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/easter-island-sightseeing\/easter-island-beaches\/anakena\/\"><strong>Anakena Beach<\/strong><\/a> in 1978. It\u2019s made of white coral with a red scoria pupil. It\u2019s a known fact that the eyes were placed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/rapa-nui-culture\/moai-easter-island-statues\/\">moai<\/a> when it was in its ahu, but it\u2019s still debated whether they were placed permanently or only during special ceremonies.<\/p>\n<h3>Rongo Rongo tablets<\/h3>\n<p>These tablets contain the mysterious <a title=\"Rongorongo\" href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/rapa-nui-culture\/rongorongo\/\"><strong>Rapa Nui writing system<\/strong><\/a>. There are only 27 original tablets worldwide, but none of them is on <a href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/\">Easter Island<\/a>. The ones displayed at the museum are replicas of those found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/imaginasantiago.com\/que-ver\/museos-de-santiago\/museo-de-historia-natural\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Museum of Natural History<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/imaginasantiago.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Santiago<\/a>, Chile.<\/p>\n<h3>Carving tools<\/h3>\n<p>These tools are made mostly of basalt and obsidian, and were used to carve and sculpt all of the monuments found on Easter Island. The islanders didn\u2019t know the existence of metal until the first Europeans arrived in the 18th century.<\/p>\n<h3>Female moai<\/h3>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4620 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/imaginarapanui.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/moai-femenino.jpg?resize=427%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Easter Island Museum-female-moai\" width=\"427\" height=\"640\" \/><br \/>\nThis clearly female moai, with features such as breasts or prominently carved vulva, is one of twelve female moai that have been discovered on Easter Island. The torso was discovered by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thor_Heyerdahl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Thor Heyerdahl<\/strong><\/a> in 1956 at Anakena, and it was in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kon-tiki.no\/e_aapning.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Kon Tiki Museum<\/strong><\/a> in Oslo until the head was found in 1988, at which point it was returned, allowing for the complete sculpture to be exhibited.  <\/p>\n<h2>Attention hours<\/h2>\n<p>Tuesday to Friday: 09:30 to 17:30<br \/>\nSaturdays, Sundays and Holidays: 09:30 to 12:30<br \/>\nMondays: closed<br \/>\nClosed on the 25th of December, 1st of January, Good Friday and May 1<sup>st<\/sup>.<br \/>\nOn September 17th and December 24th and 31st it\u2019s only open in the morning.<\/p>\n<h4>Entrance Fee<\/h4>\n<p>General admission: Free<br \/>\nThe informative texts are available free of charge in English, Japanese, French and German.<\/p>\n<p>Tel: (56) (32) 2551021<br \/>\nE-mail: mapse@mapse.cl<br \/>\nWebsite: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museorapanui.gob.cl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.museorapanui.gob.cl<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>How to get to the museum<\/h2>\n<p>The Easter Island  Museum is only 300 meters from <a title=\"Ahu Tahai\" href=\"https:\/\/imaginarapanui.com\/en\/easter-island-sightseeing\/easter-island-archaeology\/ahu-tahai\/\">Tahai<\/a> and you can easily walk there following the path along the coast and turning right.
