After almost two years of isolation and sacrifice, on December 9, 2022, a vote was held to consult the citizens whether or not they wanted to open the island and reconnect to the world. 70% of the participants voted “Yes”.

Finally, after an agreement between the Government of Chile and the local authorities, it was decided that Rapa Nui would reopen its doors to tourism on February 3, 2022, coinciding with the start of the Tapati Rapa Nui Festival.

However, on January 21, 2022, according to the latest official statement, it was decided to delay the opening of Rapa Nui to tourism again until further notice. This is mainly due to the increase in those infected by the Omicron variant in Chile and the fact that 80% of people vaccinated on the island have not yet been reached, the minimum percentage required to open the airport again.

Therefore, for the second consecutive year, the 53rd edition of the festival will take place without tourists. Rapa Nui will not be able to share its most important festival with the thousands of visitors who came to Rapa Nui to enjoy this spectacular event. In the same way, as in the year 2021, the duration of the festival will be only one week (from February 4 to 12) compared to the traditional two weeks that used to coincide with the first fortnight of February.

However, the profound changes caused by the outbreak of the pandemic offer the Rapanui people the opportunity to reconnect and unite around the heritage of a unique cultural heritage in the world.

The focus of the next celebration will be on children and family, in fact, for the first time in Tapati, children will be the protagonists in the opening ceremony of the festival that takes place on the Hanga Vare Vare stage.

The director of the Tapati Festival, Akahanga Rapu, leads the organization of this important cultural exhibition, whose realization is possible thanks to the agreements signed between the Municipality of Rapa Nui and CONADI.

As explained on the official Facebook page of the Tapati, for this new version, the work areas have already been defined, such as support for the family of the Uka Pomahina Hey Araki for the development of their candidacy, the organization of the competitions and the creation of artistic pieces by five local sculptors.

For all those who cannot attend the festival live on this occasion, they will be able to follow it virtually since the activities of Tapati 2022 will be broadcast on the organization’s social networks.

On December 14, 2021, the election of the winner of the Tapati Rapa Nui 2022 Poster Contest took place. The theme of this edition is the Rapa Nui family and the transmission of ancestral knowledge from adults to children, representing values such as the Mo’ a, tapu and the umanga.

Given the high quality of the 17 proposals received, the organizing committee faced a difficult task in choosing the best work. Finally, the poster selected to promote the festival, and head this article, belongs to the winner Teba Romera Haoa, leaving Sebastián Pakarati and Felipe Iborra in second and third place respectively.

I am very excited about what it means to participate in this instance and to be able to express Rapa Nui art. My painting is about a man who transmits to his children the knowledge and history surrounding a curanto. It is an intimate and family moment, around which he tells his children the legends that speak of the arrival on the Island and the construction of the moai ”, explained the winner, Teba Romera Haoa.
